Taking the Mystery Out of Nonprofit Advocacy: What’s allowed and what works?

What exactly is advocacy, why does it matter, and how is it different from lobbying? According to the National Council of Nonprofits, advocacy not only helps build strong communities, but it can help nonprofits fulfill their missions. Yet many nonprofits are uncertain of the role that advocacy can play in their organization. Join instructor Jason Franklin for an interactive workshop — part panel discussion, part education — in which we aim to take the mystery out of advocacy. • Gain understanding of the legalities surrounding advocacy by nonprofits• Learn how your organization can better support the voice of the population you serve• Discuss strategies to help engage your board in advocacy Cost: $60Free for GVSU students/staff with ID Deadline to register is 3:00 p.m. on September 26.  Jason Franklin, Ph.D. is the Johnson Center's W.K. Kellogg Community Philanthropy Chair. As holder of the nation’s first endowed chair focused on community philanthropy, he engages in research, teaching, service, and thought leadership to explore and advance the field, nationally and internationally. Learn more about Jason. In the case that you are unable to attend a workshop after registering, please call Tiana Hawver at 616-331-7585 or email hawverti@gvsu.edu in advance of the event to be refunded or credited for another event.
